When a computer displays a digital image, what it does is take the data in the file and display thousands of tiny dots on your screen. The more dots an image has, the more detailed the picture can be. Image quality is measured by dots per inch, or "dpi".
We will display a low image quality image if your digital picture will be less than 100 dpi on the Photo Gift.
For best results, we recommend that your digital pictures be at least 200 dpi when printed on the Photo Gift.
Why? 75 dpi is usually acceptable when an image is viewed on a computer screen. However, unless you have a very expensive, high-quality monitor, there’s a good chance that your screen doesn’t display much more than 75 pixels in an inch. When you see an image in person, you expect it to be clearer. For the most part, we expect images to be at least 100 dpi when we see them in person, or we notice that edges appear a little fuzzy. Professional photography quality is usually around 300 dpi or higher! Here’s an example of two images that look similar when viewed on a screen, but look very different when seen at printed image size:
| 1000x800 |
640x480 |
When printed as an 8x10, here’s what they’ll look like (only part of the image is shown):
